Interview with Sarah Wickett on her New Song “What We Do” By Tammy Ann Chapman

Hamilton’s Rock and Country – Sarah Wickett Interview

Hailing from Beaverton, Ontario Sarah Wickett got her start by making the bold and brave move to Toronto to pursue college but ended up finding a passion for music at the same time.

She transformed her music from being something on the side to a career. So far, 2020 has marked two single drops for Sarah; “Did It For Me” and “Friday Night In” and her third song “What We Do” comes out July 17.

We had the chance to get to know a bit about Sarah and talk about her new single release …

Q: Tell us a bit about your background. When did you decide to become a songwriter and musician?

A: I grew up in a very small town in Southern Ontario, called Beaverton. At a young age, I discovered my passion for songwriting and performing but I knew being in a small town, there wasn’t much opportunity for that. I decided to move to Toronto to pursue my music career and go to college. Since then I’ve been living in Toronto for about 4 years now and performing all over Ontario. I’ve released a ton of original music and have just been having fun and doing the thing. It’s been great!

Q: Are there any musicians that inspired you along the way?
A: Yes of course. When I was younger, I was very inspired by Christina Aguilera and Shania Twain. I feel like Shania really paved the way for female country artists. Now I find myself very inspired by up and coming artists like myself.

Q: Your sophomore EP has transitioned your sound from pop/country to country/rock. What made you decide to take this new direction?
A: I think I’ve just been taking the time to really think about what I want my music to feel like and taking it in a more sophisticated, driven direction, which just came naturally when writing the songs.

Q: Over the years you’ve toured and performed on some pretty big stages, at festivals, and fairs. Which has been your favorite so far?
A: My favorite festival I played at was Smoke N’ Spurs fest. The crowd was amazing! I opened up for Bobby Wills and it was so inspiring being on the same bill as someone as great as him.

Q: Tell us all about your new single, “What We Do.” What’s the story behind it?
A: I’m in an amazing relationship right now and I really wanted to write a sexy love song about that. I feel like women don’t talk about that kind of stuff in songs as much as men do and I wanted to change that. I’m very confident in my sexuality and I wanted to help other women feel that it’s okay to embrace that side of them as well.

Q: Can you let us in on some of your other upcoming tracks? What can fans expect?
A: Yeah! All of the songs on the EP sound very different. I’m really excited because I feel like I’m showcasing so many different sides of myself and the different genres that I love. It’s not just a country EP.

Q: What does the rest of 2020 look like for you?
A: The rest of 2020 will probably look the same as the beginning, which aside from not being able to perform, wasn’t actually that bad. I will still be writing and creating a ton. I’ll be doing a lot of live online shows and putting out music every couple of months. I am also hoping to put out a really fun merch line.

Q: If you could work with anyone in the music industry, who would it be?
A: I would love to be able to write and work with Lacy Cavalier. I love her songwriting and I think she’s incredible.
