- Can you share the story behind “Whiskey Bottle”? What inspired you to write this song, and what message do you hope listeners take away from it?
A)The inspiration behind “Whiskey Bottle” stems from reflecting on past experiences and remembering the difficult relationships of the past. I’m happily married now, but before I met my wife, finding love was often challenging and usually ended in heartbreak. We wanted to write something that deviates from the typical country song that promotes alcohol as a remedy for heartbreak. In reality, it makes things more difficult, clouding your judgment and preventing you from thinking clearly.
- What was it like working with Jim Witter and Andrew Martino on this track?
A)I always look forward to being able to work with those two guys every time I get the opportunity. Over the past few years, the three of us have worked together and have written quite a few songs now. We’ve developed a bond that meshes well together , like a family. “Each of us brings a unique style to our writing sessions. Jim delivers classic country flair, I add a rock edge, and Marty infuses pop and R&B vibes. When we come together, the blend just works really well.
- This single is a departure from your usual energetic anthems. How did you approach creating an emotional ballad that diverges from the typical “sad country song”? A) I think when writing a ballad, it’s super important to keep the approach as authentic as possible. Writing about personal experiences or experiences you have witnessed others go through is crucial to being able to write something that resonates with others. Sad songs are so relatable to everyone because, at some point in everyone’s life, they have been through some form of relationship trouble.
- How has your music evolved over the years, and how does “Whiskey Bottle” reflect your growth as an artist?
- As I’ve evolved as an artist, I’ve found that my versatility has allowed me to adapt to the shifting landscape of country music. I believe it’s important for artists to step out of their comfort zones and explore new sounds, styles, and themes. My song “Whiskey Bottle” is a prime example of this experimentation, showcasing my ability to balance sonic diversity with emotional authenticity. By embracing vulnerability and sharing my personal story, I’m able to connect with listeners on a deeper level and offer a unique perspective in the industry.
- You’ve worked with a variety of talents and explored different genres. How has this versatility influenced your music and what can fans expect from your upcoming releases?A) Working with a diverse range of individuals in the industry has been a valuable experience, as each person brings their unique flavor and style to our projects. This exposure has helped me develop my versatility, as I’ve been forced to adapt and evolve my approach while still maintaining my artistic identity.
- Can you talk about some of the key collaborations you’ve had and how they’ve impacted your music?
- One of the most memorable collaborations in my career to date was being featured on my first-ever duet, “Feel Like Home” with Karli June. It was a dream come true to finally have the opportunity to be part of a duet, and I was thrilled that it was with someone as talented as Karli. When she approached me about joining forces, I knew it was a no-brainer – her voice and style meshed perfectly with mine, and the song was truly exceptional.
- You have four Top 40 Canadian Country hits. Which of these songs are you most proud of, and why? A) I’m particularly proud of “Lit In The Sticks”, as it was the catalyst for my breakthrough into the industry and helped me define my artistic identity. With over 5 million streams and a top 40 spot on Canadian country radio, this song marked significant milestones in my career.
- How did it feel to be nominated for the Country Music Association of Ontario (CMAO) Rising Star award in 2019, and how has this recognition affected your career?
- There’s no greater thrill than being nominated for an award, especially when it comes from my peers in the industry. The music business can be demanding and competitive, so it’s an incredible honor to have my talents acknowledged by those who know and respect the craft.
- You’re gearing up for shows in Toronto this summer. What can fans expect from your live performances?
- Fans can get ready for a high-energy, foot-stomping country show that’s all about bringing the party to the partygoers! My goal is to create an unforgettable experience for my fans, and I’m committed to delivering a dynamic, fun, and rocking performance that will leave everyone dancing and singing along.
- Looking back on your journey so far, is there anything you would have done differently?
- I’m a firm believer in living in the present and not dwelling on what could’ve been. It’s natural to look back and wonder what might have been, but I’ve come to realize that regret is a heavy burden to carry. Instead, I focus on embracing where I am today and using it as an opportunity to grow and move forward, leaving the past where it belongs.
- What are your goals for the future, both in your music career and personal life?
- My primary goal as of right now is to finally complete my debut full-length album, a milestone I’ve long envisioned for my music career for a long time now. I’m excited to say we’re nearing the finish line and looking forward to sharing it with the world.
